What is a Directory? Here in My Place we will give you a short information on a directory in general!
History here at My Place: During the early development of the web, there was a list of web servers (i.e. directory) provided by Tim Berners-Lee and hosted on the CERN web server.
A web directory or sometimes called a link directory is a directory on the Internet. It specializes in providing links to other web sites. The directory categorizes the sites in its content.
A web directory does not work and is not a search engine. It does not display lists of web pages based on keywords. However, it lists web sites by category and subcategory. Most web directory entries can not be found by web crawlers but by humans as visitors! The categorization is normally based on the entire web site rather than one page or a set of keywords. Web directories often ask site owners to submit their site for addition, and have employees to review the site for fitness.
Most online directories are similar in scope. They list websites into a wide group of categories, subcategories, regions (and in our case in languages). An example of a niche directory with a large number of sites is the shopping directory. Shopping directories have the listing of retail sites. An example of a famous web directory is DMOZ. DMOZ is important based on its enormous categorization and huge number of listings. It is also free for use by other directories and search engines.
My Place brings you the following: Directories have various requirements in listing. It depends on the price paid for addition:
Paid submission: A yearly or a one-time fee is charged for listing the submitted link.
Featured listing: The link is given a premium position in a category or even multiple categories. It can be added to other pages of the directory as well.
Affiliate links: In this case, the directory makes commission for referred customers from the listed websites.
Reciprocal link: A link back to the directory must be added somewhere on the submitted site in order to get listed in the directory.
No Reciprocal link: A web directory where you will submit your links for free and no need to add link back to your website.
No follow: There is a “nofollow” attribute associated with the link. This means search engines will give no weight to the link.
Free submission: There is no fee for listing of the site.
